August 30, 2026, Georgetown - The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League Season 8 officially got underway on Saturday, August 29, at the National Training Centre (NTC), marking the return of Guyana’s premier domestic men’s football competition and setting the stage for what promises to be a highly competitive season.
The opening night delivered an exciting start to the highly anticipated six-month campaign, with Den Amstel FC securing a 2 -1 victory over Fruta Conquerors FC. Fruta Conquerors took an early lead through Jaleei Alcindor, who found the net in the 14th minute. Den Amstel responded with Calvin Richmond scoring in the 29th minute to level the score, before teammate Cleavon Murray added the decisive second-half goal to secure victory in the opening encounter.
In the night’s closing fixture, Guyana Defence Force FC (GDF FC) produced a commanding performance against Monedderlust FC, keeping a clean sheet while cruising to a convincing 5 -0 victory. Malcom Miggins opened the scoring in the 36th minute, followed by a brace from Stephen McDonald in the 39th and 45th minutes. Jeffery Pereira added a fourth in the 81st minute, before Quancy Fraser completed the scoring in the 87th minute to seal a dominant opening-night triumph for GDF FC.
The launch ceremony brought together GFF officials, participating clubs, players, coaches and supporters, with GFF President Wayne Forde highlighting the significance of the Elite League to the continued development and professionalisation of domestic football in Guyana.
“Season 8 marks another important step in the GFF’s vision to professionalise club football in Guyana. The Elite League is the highest level of domestic football and must serve as a reliable platform for identifying and developing players for our national teams. With eight of our ten clubs securing Concacaf Club Licences this season, we are seeing encouraging signs that our clubs are embracing higher standards. The GFF will continue to support and invest in our clubs, particularly those making a genuine effort to translate the essence of club licensing into a culture of strong and sustainable club administration.
We have also tripled the overall prize package, ensuring that all ten clubs can benefit financially and create an important incentive for clubs and players to pursue excellence. Following the historic and record-breaking Season 7, we anticipate another highly competitive campaign. I encourage our fans to come out in numbers, support their clubs and create an electrifying atmosphere for our players. Our message this season is simple: Stronger Together. The ceremony also featured a special presentation in honour of the Guyana Under-14 Boys, who were recognised by the Federation following their outstanding performance at the recent Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Challenge Series, where they were crowned Tier II Champions. Each member of the championship-winning squad was presented with an individual plaque in recognition of their achievement and contribution to Guyana’s success on the regional stage.
With the opening fixtures now underway, Season 8 will see 10 of Guyana’s leading clubs compete over the coming months for the coveted Elite League championship, as teams battle for crucial points and positioning throughout the campaign. The 2026/27 season is expected to deliver intense competition, featuring some of the country’s top players and clubs while providing an important platform for the continued growth and development of elite-level football in Guyana.
