GFRC Honors Late Maurees Skeete at Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk

October 26, 2026, Georgetown- The Guyana Football Referees Council (GFRC) demonstrated its solidarity with the fight against breast cancer this morning, as a contingent of referees participated in the annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk.

This year’s participation carried special significance, as members of the refereeing fraternity walked in honour of their late colleague, Maurees Skeete, who sadly succumbed to cancer in January 2026 following a courageous battle with the disease.

Skeete, a respected figure in Guyana’s refereeing fraternity, left an enduring legacy through her dedication, service and contribution to the development of football officiating. Her passing remains a profound loss to the refereeing community.

Adding significance to the occasion was the participation of Dr. Alfred King, Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, himself a former referee and former President of the GFRC. His presence underscored the enduring bonds within the refereeing fraternity and its collective commitment to supporting meaningful national causes.

For the GFRC, the walk was more than an expression of solidarity with breast cancer awareness. It was an opportunity to celebrate Skeete’s life, honour her memory and reinforce the importance of early detection, regular screening and continued support for those affected by the disease.

Speaking at the event, Third Vice President of the GFF, Dion Inniss said:

“Today, we walked not only to raise awareness, but to honour the courage, strength and legacy of Maurees Skeete. Though she is no longer with us, her contribution to refereeing and the memories she created will forever remain part of our fraternity.”

The GFRC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote health, awareness and community engagement, while encouraging its members and the wider football family to remain active advocates in the fight against breast cancer.

For the referees, every step taken this morning was a step in remembrance of Maurees Skeete, a colleague, a trailblazer and a member of the football family whose legacy will never be forgotten.
