TOP CLASS YOUTH FOOTBALLERS SHOW OFF SKILLS IN VARIOUS MEMBER ASSOCIATIONS’ MATCHES
5th March, Georgetown: Football buffs around the country are enjoying a special brand of the sport as youth footballers display their skills in the GFF-Pele Alumni Frank Watson U-15 football League, which continued at various venues countrywide over the weekend.
Over on the West Coast, the Combined Team was scheduled to match skills with Eagles last Saturday afternoon but the former team failed to show up thus gifting a walk over to their opponents. Eagles then procured valuable match practice in a game against Wales and came out victorious 3-0. Frances Persaud netted a brace with Romel Medas tucking in the other goal.
Trevon Abrams – lone goal earned Pouderoyen the victory over Den Amstel
The game between Pouderoyen and Den Amstel ended favourably for the former team 1-0 after the referee awarded a penalty following a handball by center back player, Samuel McLeod. Trevon Abrams took the penalty kick and scored in the 54th minute of the game. Wales now move to the head of the points table with six points after winning both of their games so far while Pouderoyen occupy the second place slot on four points after playing four games with two wins, one draw and one loss. The other points standing in the West Demerara zone will soon be released.
Meanwhile, the Berbice Football Association has completed the second round of the tournament and Corriverton Links scored twice on either side of the game to defeat Hearts of Oak 4-0, on Saturday 3rd March, at the Esplanade Park, New Amsterdam. The match ended with the former team inflicting a resounding 4 – nil whipping on their counterparts at the same venue. Mortland Peneux (10th) received support from Matthias Lewis, who contributed a brace, in the 12th and 60th minute and Micah Gurdin in the 37th minute. Corriverton Links have now secured two wins from as many matches.
Earlier, the match between Hearts of Oak and Young Strikers had been deemed a draw but subsequent investigations revealed that Nicholas Browne, Young Striker’s goal scorer, has surpassed the stipulated age limit, which resulted in his team being disqualified. Orealla Falcons currently lead the points standing in that Association with nine points while three teams are huddled on six points apiece. They are NA United, Cougars FC and Corriverton Links. Two teams, Monedderlust and Hearts of Oak are on three points each while Young Strikers, Rosignol United, Arsenal, Hopetown United Rangers and East Bank Gunners remain in the cellar with no point.
In action on the East Demerara Football Association, Buxton United inflicted a 4-1 drubbing on Victoria Scorpions with the marksmen for the winners being Colin Henriques (12th), Antoine Sullivan (24th), Anyika Headley (69th) and Mahkaya Jarvis (74th). Rickford Sutton’s goal defection in the 25th minute was the only consolation for the losing team. Mahaica Determinators was gifted a walk over from Buxton Youth Developers. The final game of the evening saw Golden Stars and Buxton Stars battling to a 1-1 stalemate. Japhet Sam (35th) netted for the former team while Kubina Thomas brought the situation back to equilibrium two minutes later.
Meanwhile, two matches were scheduled to be played at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground, Essequibo; Charity was scheduled to lock horns with Good Hope while Devonshire Castle was matched against the Super 11 team. Both matches were postponed because of the unavailability of the venue, which was used to facilitate Mashramani celebrations in that region. Those encounters are now scheduled for Saturday, March 10.
In the Upper Demerara Football Association, several clubs are currently battling for top honours including Milerock, Amelia’s Ward, Botofago, Hi-Stars, Silva Shattas, Topp XX and Eagles. To date, five clubs have played four games each; Milerock, Amelia’s Ward, Hi-Stars, Eagles and Top XX. Silva Shattas FC has played five.
However, Milerock has amassed 10 points, the most to date, after winning three of their encounters with the other ending in a draw. Amelia’s Ward is one point shy of the leaders after winning three and losing one of their encounters. Hi Stars also played four games and experienced mixed fortunes after winning two and losing a similar amount. They are on six points, the same as Botofago but has played four games as against three by the latter team. The other points standing are Silva Shattas, one win, two losses and two drawn encounters are on five points while Eagles are in the cellar with one point after playing four games, losing three with one drawn encounter. The next match in this MA is scheduled for Saturday, 10th March with Eagles vs Amelia’s Ward at 13:00hrs and Botofago vs Hi-Stars a 14:30hrs.
