BERBICE LAUNCHES TOURNAMENT WITH SEVERAL EXCITING MATCHES

1st March, Georgetown: Residents of the Ancient County, were treated to an evening of exciting football when the Berbice Football Association (BFA) launched the GFF-Pele Alumni Frank Watson U-15 football league at the Esplanade Park, New Amsterdam, last Sunday evening.

There were five grueling matches but even before the first ball was kicked, the ten participating clubs engaged in a colorful march pass before a high-level Council that included President of the BFA, Keith Ojeer; GFF Technical Director, Ian Greenwood; Secretary, Joseph Simon and New Amsterdam Municipal Councilor, Kirk Fraser.

Both Greenwood and O’Jeer were happy that the tournament finally got underway and encouraged the youths to work hard. The officials also urged the players to remain focused on their goals as this could be very rewarding. It was revealed that a team of scouts would be on the lookout for special talent to recommend for possible induction into the GFF-Scotiabank Academy Training Centers (ATC) thus heightening their chances of getting into the national team.

Mr. Fraser, encouraged the youths to give of their best even as he underscored the need for fair play. He further committed to collaborate with Central Government to enhance the relevant infrastructure to facilitate development in both academics and sports in the region.

Orealla Falcons’ sharp shooters in their 9 nil drubbing of East Bank Gunners, in the opening match of the BFA U15 League

Meanwhile, when the action got underway, Orealla Falcons humiliated East Bank Gunners 9 nil to register their first win. Shano Edwards and Brett Sarius netted hat tricks for the winners in the 8th, 12th & 34th and the 39th, 44th & 45th minutes respectively. Daniel Alexander netted a brace in the 22nd & 30th minutes while Carlton Hamilton capped the humiliation with a 57th minute success.

Corriverton Links then defeated Arsenal FC 3-0 with all three goals coming from the boots of Matthias Lewis in the 35th, 46th & 59th minutes.

Monnederlust FC Bryon Bailey 25th & Michael Jordan 32nd in their 3-1 win over NA United who got an OG from Bailey (52′)

Monedderlust FC next defeated NA United 2-1 with Bryon Bailey (22nd) and Michael Jordon (27th) scoring for the winners with Bryon Bailey reducing the opposition’s deficit with a goal default.   However, NA United got the last laugh when Monedderlust player, Daniel LaRose, was found to be over the stipulated age causing his team to be disqualified and the match subsequently awarded to NA United.

Cougars FC were also in winners’ row and defeated Hopetown United Rangers 4 nil after Tyrese Tim and Kevon Hamilton both netted a brace apiece in the 3rd & 56th and the 27th & 49th minutes respectively.  Hearts of Oak played Young Strikers and the former team scored midway in the first half. They held on to that slim lead almost to the final whistle when Young Strikers front man, Nicholas Browne, breached their defense in the 67th minute and brought the situation back to equilibrium moments before the final whistle.

Its early days yet but four teams have surged ahead with 3 points each. They are Orealla Falcons FC, Cougars FC, Corriverton Links FC and N A United FC. Hearts of Oak and Young Strikers FC have accumulated one point apiece while Monedderlust FC, Arsenal FC, Hopetown United Rangers FC, East Bank Gunners and Rosignol United are bundled in the cellar with no points.

Activities continue on Friday March 2 with 4 other matches; Arsenal takes on Orealla at Esplanade Park starting at 10:00hrs while NA United opposes Hopetown Rangers at 11:30hrs. East Bank Gunners will then tackle Monedderlust at 13:30hrs with Cougars FC up against Young Strikers from 15:00hrs. Orealla Falcons and Rosignol will bring the curtains down at 16:30hrs.
