GFF PROVIDES TECHNICAL SUPPORT TO MILO UNDER 18 SCHOOLS’ FOOTBALL COMPETITION

10th March, 2018, Georgetown: The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) is providing technical support to the Milo Under18 Schools’ Football Competition to aid in the development of talent both at the level of the students and coaches.

This support is the form of a technical personnel (licensed coaches and Technical Development Officers – TDO) being assigned to work with participating schools as well as site visits to gthe coaching sessions of the said schools.

According to Technical Director, Ian Greenwood, this initiative is part of developing the players’ understanding of the game and to raise the quality of same: “The quality on the pitch at school competitions in Guyana needs much improvement, players game understanding and technical skills is currently below the standard of our regional competitors.  We have a few very strong school teams in which they have a heavy presence of youth national team players, but across the board we need improvement. The coaches will also be working with the current school teachers to upskill their knowledge and understanding of age appropriate coaching in line with the national playing philosophy.

Greenwood said the officers, as assigned, will also conduct periodic visits to the schools to offer additional technical support as required by respective schools.

The development of talent in the formal school system is part of the GFF’s youth development strategy, which seeks to create a pathway for selection into the senior team – the Golden Jaguars. This is facilitated through the GFF-Scotiabank Academy Training Centres (ATCs), held weekly in the nine Regional Member Associations (RMAs). At the ATCs, certified coaches work with, monitor and enable the development of key player skills in keeping with the national coaching philosophy.
